BURLS
My first pieces were modeled after burls cut from water oak trees uprooted in our backyard by Hurricane Matthew in Savannah, Georgia in 2016. Disruptions in the growth patterns of trees caused by nature or humans has drawn my attention for over two decades. These strange organic forms appear as ominous clouds or land masses inspired by Chinese scholars stones. Burls are usually caused by insects and are filled with small knots from dormant buds disturbing the growth patterns of trees.
